(Information from my previous post on hagfish)

The hagfish is not actually a fish. They are a more primitive creature. Hagfish have light-sensing cels instead of eyes and are the only species in the world who have a skull without a vertebral column; however, what makes them notable is a wonderfully horrific and unique type of slime they generate which has no match in the natural world. The exuded slime comes from the dozens of greater slime glands located along both sides of the body and around the cloaca.

The slime contains incredibly powerful protein strands that make it highly durable and temporarily capture water. You can see a video of the slime properties here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvj0-C4V6dI A tiny amount of the proto-slime captures a massive amount of water as the complex protein threads expand (by the help of mucin strands) and create a viscoelastic membrane around the hagfish. This allows them to escape predator grip and disturb water flow over gills. Because of the success with this unique defense mechanism, hagfish have long lifespans and few births. Unfortunately this has resulted in overfishing in certain regions as hagfish are slow to reproduce and recover in number. Many hagfish fishery regions, like in Korea and Japan, have almost completely eliminated their hagfish populations.

Certain species of hagfish, like this pacific hagfish, are true hermaphrodites that contain both a testis and ovary.

I created the character on a general dare among friends to make an anthropomorphic nightmare creature to terrify other Tapestries members with. Little did I know that I would end up finding them absolutely fascinating and enjoy playing the character over more normal ones.
