The zhr (/ʒɚ/) is an intelligent, semi-parasitic alien species. Their bodies are about 1-2 cm in length, and can be various colors.

Outside of the zhr home planet, most zhrs are found living inside other organisms, often animals, where they can form a symbiotic relationship and take over the host organism, combining their own durability and flight with the advantages of a much larger body. However, outside of exceptional cases, the host has ultimate control over the body, and so it is imperative that a zhr keep its host satisfied with the relationship.

Zhrs are unique in having two separate "mouths". One is oriented away from the limbs and is used for talking; the other is on the opposite side of the eyes and is used for eating and other functions. The "talking mouth" lacks teeth, and so the zhrs cannot use it to pronounce dental approximants (the English "th" sounds).
