A new design for my RedBubble, the Chickasaw story of Deer and Possum.

One fall day, possum sat in a persimmon tree. He was very fat, because he could climb around in all the fruit trees that no other animal could reach. He saw deer passing under him, skinny and starving because he couldn’t reach any food and the plants were rapidly becoming dormant for winter.

"Hey possum, do you know how I could get some food?" Deer called out.

Possum thought for a bit and said “I know! There’s a mound over there, go to the top of it and get a running start. If you hit this tree very hard, some persimmons might fall down!”

So deer went to the top of the mound, got a running start, and head butter the tree. He was killed instantly.

Possum laughed so hard and for so long that his mouth stretched out and has been that way ever since.
