Galleria WIP - Stormcast Eternal

kritheavix

I'll admit that I was taken by the artwork showing off these Stormcast Eternals almost immediately. Gold and blue has long been a favourite choice of colours for me, and to see them so bold and bright as the face of the 'New Warhammer,' Age of Sigmar, I was immediately hooked. I've played a couple dozen games of the new system and am absolutely loving it so far; the 'easy to learn, challenging to master' approach to the simple rules and varied unit abilities means that you're constantly finding new subtleties that the four pages of rules (available to download from Games Workshop for free, along with detailed rules for every unit currently in production) didn't seem they could contain. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Sometimes I'll spend ages poring over the lore, struggling with colour choices and schemes that will reflect a fighting force I like the look of, but with the Stormcast Eternals, 'Paint them like they are on the box!' was really the only chance I had. I love the look of them, and I haven't ever actually painted bright gold armour like these guys have. Enter two new paints, funnily enough coinciding with the launch of Age of Sigmar: Retributor Armour and Liberator Gold. They're both absolutely glorious additions to the range, and I can't foam about the ease of application and depth of colour to Retributor Armour nearly enough. It's fantastic.

This isn't really a WIP as much as... I just haven't applied the transfer and the base isn't finished. Hurriedly painted brown so I can show off the miniature itself, I'd actually be curious for suggestions from the peanut gallery on how to do the base!

    this looks pretty cool.

Thanks a lot. I'm pretty pleased with how he came out! :)

I can imagine. In over ten years I didn't manage to apply more than base color to my WH 40k Space Marines. always something else coming up or me not feeling like it...

its too bad the new paints are fuck you expensive

    • Link

Well, that's not really something that's going to change with a comment on a random stranger's work, I'm afraid. Besides which, I'm actually quite well pleased with the paint I bought, and I've still got pots that're more than four years old that I dig out occasionally to paint with. So price is relative, assuming you look after your materials.

      • Link

I never intended to change anything with that comment so I'm not sure you're getting that idea; I'm just stating a fact is all.

Like while the materials of GW are good products they -are- criminally overpriced for what you get in return. Citadel paint comes in a pot, which can lead to issues of their own if not maintained properly. Citadel paint also comes in from what I remember 12ml pots, and at the price you pay for them that comes out to around 30+ cents per ml of paint (at 12ml).

Versus something like Vallejo, a dropper bottle for low maintenance, which has more paint for less money (17ml of paint per bottle at 14~ cents a ml).

Paint with whatever you want and enjoy doing so. I do not want to change that at all. But the fact remains that it is still super expensive.

Well, I'll be blunt. I find it aggravating beyond reason when someone shows up on a Workshop-related post and almost invariably has something to say about price. You know what? I don't give two shits. I don't make a habit of rocking into people's galleries to comment on commissions and say how a particular artist charges too much; I don't point out that someone's car cost more than a comparable engine would in a similar chassis from a different manufacturer. You're stating a fact that isn't really relevant to what I had posted except to heap bile on GW, which, having been involved in this hobby for twenty years, I've had quite enough of hearing.

I have a number of Vallejo paints, some Army Painter brushes and a couple of Revell glues in my arsenal. I'm not some newcomer who's only been fed the propaganda, so the fact that the paints I choose to purchase are super expensive isn't really any of my concern.

hah, god you're salty and defensive

if you dont want people making comments relating to what you post then make them private or something; I saw this on the frontpage originally

twenty years huh? well I guess after that long one would be used to bending over for GW paints

            oh well! happy painting, friend!

            • Link

              You're a bit of a shitter huh?

It's fine to have opinions but they clearly have differing ones and you being an entitled piece of poo and coming onto a COMPLETE STRANGERS gallery to start a fight makes you look like an utter child.

If anyone is salty, sir, it is you. Salty and holier-than-thou.

I suggest you mosie on along and refrain from doing this to others in the future because it's sort of obnoxious and not a great way to act towards others. If you have nothing nice to say, keep your trap shut.

I'm a cheap ass mother glubber, and I'll bitch about a billion things, esp. about GW, but the paints aren't one of them.

They're some of the better paints out there, excluding the pot, and they're really thick. You get way more than you'd think out of a pot. Like 2-4x.

How'd the paints handle, in comparison to the older GW metals? I've had trouble making them work in the past... and my metals seem to have dried up past use.

Wait, that's your first attempt at gold??! I'm so gelatinous. I can't get the damned thing to look halfway decent!

Also: did you use a wash?

First attempt at gold armour. I've done plenty of spot details, shield bosses and the like in gold before, but on something this large it's a first. I have to say that Retributor Armour goes on a lot smoother and with a great deal better coverage than the likes of Shining Gold. Yes, it's a base paint, but even they tend to have some lingering issues with bright colours and coverage. Not so in this case. I basecoated the whole thing with it, then gave it a pretty heavy wash of Reikland Fleshshade. Auric Armour Gold over the top to give me the first layer, then Liberator Armour for highlights with a few spot highlights of whatever passes as Mithril Silver these days.

Thanks for the info! I must say your shade came out quite so supple that I was sure you used it, but I couldn't see the aggregation you usually get on a wash.

I'm using very old stuff, but I've found my basic Ceramite and Yriel colours to be quite effective. I can't say I've tried the other foundations, though. I really need some new metals, I can't even revify my gold...s anymore!

Wait, 'Auric' gold? That means 'Goldy Gold'. At least 'Brazen Brass' isn't alone anymore. ;)

You really have a delicate touch to your coloring. This looks way better than figures you would find in some collector's editions. Beautiful job, Krithea. <3

This is great! I can't seem to get my hands on any kantor blue, so I've had to make do with macgragge blue. It's rather aggravating.
