Sexuality: uhhhh People who don’t try to kill it?

Species: A space phoenix.

Defining/notable traits: A space phoenix, on its own, is a wonderful thing. They are oviparous as a whole, able to assimilate extra DNA from willing partners, but they can only hatch/create their own kind. On a planet’s surface, they look like this, but come in a wide variety of colors - all the colors, in fact, to denote the temperatures of fires or heat. White and black are the rarest, and the other colors follow after. This particular one is a white one.

Otherwise, at the end of their lifecycle, they burst into flames, becoming ash that reforms again into a giant, six winged dragon/bird/alien thing that flies into the stars to look for another home. Forever they wander, from place to place. Once they find a new world, they enter the atmosphere, again burning to ash until the hit they ground, once again to be reborn and to grow into the form you see above.

Some have stayed on worlds for all time because they find an inescapable love, ignoring the instinctual call to head into the dark, dying forever once they reach the end of their long lives, but many, due to the fact that if they insist on living beyond, and not returning to the cold, will usually outlive those they love. This tends to result in their sensitive natures breaking, and their last years often are enormously sad ones, wandering about without purpose, rejected by the stars, crying forever until true death finds them.

Some of them are hunted, and they are already rare. They are hunted in their large forms for their scales and feathers, to have as pets in either form, or otherwise they are caught and killed, their bodies cracked open for their hearts. Why? Well, to feast upon their hearts is to gain immortality. Their tears, like regular phoenixes, can heal wounds and extend lives, so many have been caught and tortured.

In any case, they are by nature a curious species, sweet, perhaps naive for the most part, usually willing, and once they find any other of their kind, they speak with their lampwick voices and songs, singing of their adventures and heartaches, the sights and sounds, all manner of things which they have experienced before they part again.
