profiles in monstrosity 3 by kogith

it consists of two spheres, each with an opening about half the sphere's total width and hollow for a little more than half its volume, linked by a narrow cord 4-5 times the length of a sphere. The inner surface of each sphere is smooth and slightly concave with a hole in the center, leading to the cord, which is minutely ridged on the inside. The surface of the sphere around the hollow portion is translucent and iridescent; the rest has a smoky or milky appearance but is essentially opaque. it bears diffuse parallel lines from the aperture to the cord, varying in color from rust to pale pink or occasionally a dusty violet.

it is unbelievably light and often carried moderate distances by air currents. The spheres are easily deformed by impacts but can regain their shape within a few minutes. it rarely suffers any other form of damage, but injuries are almost invariably fatal when they do occur. it is often seen wrapped around power lines, tree limbs, and such, but when thus restricted the cord becomes increasingly brittle and fractures after about a week. Each half of it then regrows the cord and a second sphere, which takes another week or two depending on temperature and possibly other environmental conditions. This is the only means by which it is known to reproduce.

its source of energy is not known. One possible clue is that when rainfall or other liquids happen to collect inside a sphere, tiny bubbles can be seen at the liquid's surface.
