The SA-22 is a heavy pistol designed by StrakArms under contract of the Ascendancy's Special Operations Command. Chambered in .357 Magnum and being gauss-assisted, it utilizes the same technology as other small arms fielded by the Strax Ascendancy's CAFSA.

After the CAFSA's campaign on Artemis Prime came to a close, Ascendancy SOC approached General Nikolai Wulf regarding shortcomings with the standard issue SA-11 pistol in the hands of the Irregulars. With the creation of a second special operations group, the Seraphim, nearing completion, SOC made a request to the General for a new sidearm, one chambered in a larger round than the SA-11 and had more versatility. General Wulf brought the request to Grand General Galkarot personally, who agreed after the evidence was put forward that a better sidearm was needed for SOC. This was compounded by the fact that the Ascendancy was drawing up plans for a invasion of Sathanas Prime, the Solaris Union's primary hub in the quadrant.

Designs and testing went throughout the Zecarov campaign, with StrakArms competing with Volk Design Bureau until the final design that would become the SA-22 was chosen near the end, with StrakArms winning the competition. In the two years between the Zecarov and Sathanas campaigns, the SA-22 was put into mass production and issued to SOC members. 

The Sathanas Campaign would prove to be the Union's final defeat in the quadrant, sealing with Ascendancy's dominance in the galactic arm. The SA-22 got its trial by fire in multiple operations during the campaign, proving to be a favored weapon by both SOC and Officers of the CAFSA alike. It was also selected by Colonel Nika Simonov to become the standard issue sidearm for the Postroitka synthetic combat units.
