Cockatoo, Cacatuidae, are omnivorous birds that includes up to 21 species. The life span of these birds ranges widely depending on their species. Cockatiels live between 10 to 14 years while the White Cockatoo can life as long as 60 years. Other species such as the Sulphur-crested cockatoo or the black cockatoos can live up to 40 or 50 years old. This family of birds can be spotted by their distinctive feathered crests and curved bills. Often less colorful than other parrot species, cockatoos are usually white, black, or grey with the colorful crest, tail, or cheeks. Even though less colorful, they are often larger than other parrots. Cockatoos are native to Australia, the Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomon islands, and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea. 11 of the Cockatoo species can be found only in Australia. The cockatiel is known as being smaller and slimmer than other species coming in at only 13 inches long including it's tail and weighing under 4 oz. On average, Cockatoos will be a larger 24 inches in length and weighing up to 3 lbs. Cockatoos possess a loud, harsh voice that is used for a variety of calls such as alerting of predators, recognizing individuals, expressing emotions, or keeping a flock together. They even possess a range of vocalizations unique to specific species. The Carnaby's black cockatoo is known to have up to 15 calls while others such as the gang-gang cockatoo only emit noise when giving soft growls during feeding. These intelligent creatures even have a species called the palm cockatoo which communicates over vast distances by drumming a stick against a dead branch. They prefer a wide range of habitats depending on species as well. The glossy black cockatoo prefers woodlands, shrublands, and rain forests. The red-vented cockatoo will live in mangroves while widespread species such as the cockatiel or galah live in wide open country land perfect for finding grass seeds to feed on. A Cockatoo's diet consists of primarily seeds opened by their powerful bills, however, they will also a wide range of vegetables or insects. However, a few species are known as specialists and will consume only specific foods. The glossy black cockatoo prefers only the cones of trees within the Allocasuarina genus, specifically choosing a singe species of tree called the drooping sheoak native to southeastern Australia. Cockatoos will awake in the morning after the sun as warmed their nesting sites, usually found near a source of water. Cockatoos will spend their time in highly social flocks that will travel, roost, and forage for food together. When breeding occurs, cockatoos will form monogamous pair bonds that last years. Nests are built within the holes of trees and, at times, they will return to the same nesting site multiple years in a row. The amount of eggs, rate of growth, and period of time offspring spend with their parents depends primarily on species, food supply, and weather conditions.
