Two Robert Crumb characters that I really really like but no else seems to know. I can't even tell you the proper titles of the two stories they appear in because I only know the ones from the German translation. D:

Anyway, this picture is inspired by the second story they appear in. The dog Donnie visits his friend who ended up in a mental institution after a failed relationship, and they stroll through the park, having a bizarre conversation.

For years I just saw it yet another of Crumb's whacky stories, until I watched "Crumb", that documentary about the comic artist. Then it became fairly obvious that it was a disguised six-pager about his metally ill brother, and therefore a rather personal comic. Since then it's been one of these stories that I have to think about for one reason or another every once in a while. And apparently strong enough to actually sit down and doodle them on a page in a sketchbook.
