I really love old-timey animation and I'll use any excuse to draw it.
This is actually the first picture I made using this grainy effect.in Photoshop. Here's the steps:
- Duplicate the final greyscaled image and place it on top
- Use Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and make the layer partially transparent
- Duplicate the first layer again and place it on top
- Use Filter > Artistic > Film Grain and make the layer partially transparent
- Make a new layer and flood fill it with black
- Use Filter > Texture > Grain with Vertical grain type. Select "Screen" layer blend type.
I can't take credit for this trick though, I got it off a message board many many years ago that I've forgotten.
