Bearded war axe by ijoe

Bearded war axe

ijoe

Physical art project I completed recently.

This was made from a 16" diameter saw blade that was being scrapped at work. Saw blades are ironically not guaranteed to be good blade material, but this one seemed to harden up pretty well from heat-treatment. The handle is red oak from a pallet.
Blade length is 10.5", handle it 22".

Harder to see, but there are runes stamped in along both sides of the blade and handle, transcribing a verse from the Hávamá;
Það kann ek þriðja:
ef mér verðr þörf mikil
hapts við mína heiptmögo,
eggjar ek deyfi
minna andskota,
bítaþ þeim vápn né veler.

A third [song] I know: if sore need should come
of a spell to stay my foes;
when I sing that song, which shall blunt their swords,
nor their weapons nor staves can wound.

Supposedly [w]odin wrote this, though the Hávamá was just a collection of poems passed down orally and finally collected and written down around 700 years ago.

    You make some fine looking stuff with /great/ presentation.

    The song seems to be about making the enemy unable to fight, and says little or nothing about then slaying them. I see them finding their weapons are useless, and fleeing. And the one using the spell, to allow them to flee.

      If you're going to take the time to make such an item, there's no reason not to spend another hour setting up a scene and cleaning the image up, right?

      Odin never actually mentions the spells themselves in the verses. Only the descriptions :/
