It seems like a crazy lot of work for petty reasons, but I can't find any fault in it.

I guess my logic was that being disowned and rejected by your family for who you are isn't small or petty, but regardless was turned around into a motivational factor in order to give his life a track to move forward on.

Being disowned and rejected is certainly not petty. It's rather abhorrent, really. I meant that it seems rather petty to go out of your way to antagonize them for it. Working hard at life should be for your own rewards, not to antagonize someone else. But if you're going to do it, I certainly can't fault the method of "be better than anything they ever expected"
