This structure is called Portikus. It was built in 1896 after the original building, which it was modelled after, was torn down. During World War II, the structure was heavily damaged, but in the late 80s, the structure gained protected status. The bombing of Braunschweig in WWII is, to me, a horrifying chapter that civilians experience from war. As with many places in Europe during the war, the destruction and loss of life was immense, And yet this surviving structure stands so peacefully there today.
