They used to be human but mysteriously mutated from an unknown cause.

The gear and rubber suit will slowly and painfully fuse to the wearer and become it's new skin. During the mutation the human nature will slowly be forgotten and be replaced with a more feral and highly aggressive nature. Going through a full mutation will sometimes take months to fully complete.
Sometimes the skin will become too tight in certain areas and split open. The scar tissue that fills in these splits are oddly transparent. While in the dark, the transparent tissue will have an unsettling soft dim white glow.

The reason for the radical shift in body shape is still unclear.
Field research to find out more information has proved fatal on multiple occasions.
