Tom was born the only child to a middle class family in one of Flint's more affluent suburbs. His father's medical career made it possible for his mother to stay at home and be there as a child. At some time before kindergarten, the Dawson family moved into the subdivision, and Tom and Milo Dawson became fast playmates and friends through school--to the point where they both decided to attend the same college. During their freshman year in high school, Tom confided to Milo that he thought he was gay. Several days later, the shy bear not only confessed that he too had an attraction to men, but that he'd harbored a crush on Tom for years. In college, as they officially came out, they had an informal relationship, which ended at graduation. Milo took a job offer in Atlanta, and Tom returned home to Michigan.

Tom's parents were killed in a plane crash in 1998, leaving him the heir to his father's money as well as a considerable settlement from the airline. He founded a local GLBT center with part of the money and invested the rest, insuring that he's have a reliable income. Both depressed and lonely, he offered another school friend, Quentin "Quixote" Adams living space in the basement in 1999, after Quixote got out of a bad living situation. After offering boarding space to several other gay men in the area, his home was soon nicknamed "Mulligan Manor" in the local GLBT community.

Tom is optimistic and cheerful, despite having endured more than his fair share of family tragedy, cuturalized hated, and homophobia over the years. He believes that everyone has both innate good and potential for fulfillment in life, and tries to steer negativity towards a more positive spin in his social circles. Likewise, he's equally protective of those he's adopted into his surrogate family--fiercely so in several cases. He's had several relationships since college, but is currently single. He genuinely loves Milo, but can't bring himself to formally ask the bear into a relationship because Milo's been closeted for so long and needs free space to explore his identity. Instead, he tries to be both mentor and lover, hoping that Milo will decide upon a relationship when he's ready.
