An Exploration of Moonsteel (Christophe Update 2013) by Fariday (critique requested)

An Exploration of Moonsteel (Christophe Update 2013) (critique requested)

Fariday

For all who have not seen Christophe before, he's one of my more well-used characters in my short-stories (not posted on this site for now- not until I actually work on finishing some of them)

This is more or less a full revamp of his armor; the basic idea with him stays the same (if you've actually seen him before). He wears what, in my small series of stories, is called 'Lunarian Moonsteel', with a form-fitting suit of micro-chainmail underneath.

That mail (the black chain underneath the armor) is so fine that it appears more as fabric in both touch, weight, and appearance (a technicality which has let me avoid drawing hundreds of chain links when drawing him- I fully intend to draw a picture of him with just the chain on to show what that looks like on its own). It's supposedly stronger than regular chain by orders of magnitude, but is extremely costly to make and it takes a master metalsmith years to perfect.

The moonsteel, on the other hand, is a silver-white metal with a unique blue/white luster to it, which is more or less reminiscent of moonlight reflecting off of the surface of water at night.

It's got a strange reflective sheen to it, which led me to try a 'new' shading style on the steel. I like it.

And... The story behind his visor... Well, to be honest, the IRL reason is I, at the time, hated drawing eyes so much (getting them to look good -and- match?) that I gave him the visor to make sure I would have a semi-legit reason not to draw them. And eventually, even as I got better with them, the visor had become part of the character and his backstory. As much an identifying feature as anything else. I liked it a lot, and just never did away with it.

Backstory-wise? He received a wound that discolored his left eye permanently, coloring the sclera (the white of the eye) red, when his blood stained it permanently rather than being drained or absorbed, and the iris became yellow. Given the stigma associated with such coloration in the society of his world, he hides behind the visor at all times.

Strangely enough, his right eye is still a vibrant blue. And he retains perfect vision out of both eyes.

His weapon (I'm not even 100% sure what the hell type of weapon it is) I actually designed a lot longer ago, before he existed as a character. It's changed a few times and is hard to maintain consistently between new works, but it seemed to go well with him, considering he doesn't fit the bill of a sword'n'shield type of hero.

It fits moreso because he was raised as a monk, and only later donned the armor. He would have some experience with polearms, staves and halberd-type weapons, as well as hand-to-hand combat, similar to ideas of shaolin monks popularized in the west.

But come on... It's a fantasy. It has to be frickin' big. Right?
