Before his time at the School of Aura-Storschiealas, Magnus would find a book here and there and learn some spells, techniques that could fall into the hands of anyone. What set him apart, aside from his appearance, was the sheer amount of power put behind such basic abilities.

The lack of proper experience, and the lack of being so aloof as other wizards, afforded him a lot of work as a mercenary, and not all of it very clean. In the middle of the night, feet sinking into the mud in the middle of a thunderstorm, on the verge of being surrounded by fountains of blood... At least the rain will wash away some of it.
