TellTaleFirebrand from FA asked how I did the wave for Best Friends: Wartortle and Frogadier, and I thought it'd be easier if I dug up some wip images. Then I thought, since I have them open, why not make another process image out of them.
In terms of technique, after I drew the rough sketch, the wave was painted by laying down the rough colors I had chosen, influenced by several different surfing pictures I liked (influenced by, not color dropped or copied), then slowly built up the details. Midway through the painting it looked too light to me, so I added darks for contrast, then continued cleaning it up and building up the details. I hope this explanation is a little helpful, I feel like I'm not doing a great job explaining haha (maybe it's the fatigue). Hopefully with the images it makes sense.
