A pleasant day by DramaLlama (critique requested)

The soft chirping outside of his window orchestrated perfectly to the rustling of the grass and leafs in the breeze while he slept. In many years, this was the first time he had slept in so late, so peacefully. It was not until the light cracked through his window that he had awoke, not with a startle, but with a soft yawn and stretch. He resumed laying there with a somber smile on his face, merely staring at the door to his room, the wood on it soft and aged to match the decor. It wasn't much of a room, there was a table and chair, fully stocked with books and writing utensils and also his bed, which was a soft mat, supported off the floor by a wooden base.

Today he wasn't hungry and merely laid in bed, glancing around at the various things in his small sanctuary, the one place he held dear to him. He was eventually made to sit up as there was a firm rapping at his door before opening and he greeted the others with a silent, smiled wave. The walk was pleasant to the outside, the stone floor clicking firmly under footsteps till they got to the main door which was slowly pulled open.

The light flooded into the hallway as it revealed the spring scenery which always brought a smile to his face. He walked down the wooden steps to the gravel and dirt path that was made for traveling, on each side lined with grass and pleasant looking weeds. The path was softly shaded by tree-limbs, christened with newly formed leafs that swayed in the new, flower-scented breeze.

He began his walk down the path, every so often giving a wave to other passerbys or those out working the fields while he headed into town. The town bustled everyday, but was quieter today with the events going on, leaving the shops currently closed and stalls empty.

He made his way to the center of town, the building surrounding the raised platform were made of wood and brick, creating a warmth of browns and reds. Eventually, he stopped at the stairs leading upwards, they were old but strong wood that gave soft creaks with each step upwards he took. As he reached the top, He turned to face the crowd that was slowly gathering around the raised platform where he quietly looked over each person. Everyone else stared back at him, some in awe, most others as silent as him while another climbed the platform to greet him.

The newcomer greeted the other with a quite stare then a nod, which was returned with a light smile. As the two stared at one-another, eventually the other turned around, facing the crowd as well to praise then with an uproar of cheer and fervor. His voice boomed with the authority that lead the town, speaking words to rally and excite the onlookers as the silent one stood, staring around with his smile.

The crowd eventually settled down as they began their prayers and sayings, each one followed by a mutterance of amens. All eyes looked upon the first to climb the platform as silence fell over everything. The bird's chirped as the grass rustled in the breeze, distant animals could be heard every so often in the dead silence. It seemed like an eternity as the clouds rolled smoothly over the land and sky as everyone looked onwards. Soon, a cloud blotched the heated sun's rays as the snap of the mechanical device sprung to life, followed by the rope snapping taught, leaving the dead silence curdled by gurgles and faint gasps and hisses of useless breaths.
