Das Sandcastles! Mit die Color!

Cubs can be so creative!
Little architects Gemma and Mandy are hard at work building a dream castle for princess grub (who will most likely be needing a trip through the washy-machine after playtime today).
While Mandy busies herself putting the finishing touches on the lookout tower, it seems Gemma has found a vicious attack snail to guard the princess while she naps.^^
It always makes me smile when I see how focused little ones can be when they’re crafting whole worlds of their own. I guess it’s part of that youthful magic that makes me want to hold onto my imagination. To them, everyday can be an adventure of the utmost importance.

As for the drawing itself, I dunno why, but I really got into this new technique I hadn’t ever tried before. I basically just did the sandcastle by putting bunches and bunches of tiny dots everywhere. It’s an art technique my cub taught me about recently; it’s called “pointillism,” I think.

The process itself is a lot of fun: by spreading out tons of unconnected pieces to make a whole, the brain automatically wants to fill in the blanks like a puzzle, so you can see the picture without having to rely on thick, or bulky lines.

It works great for, well…sand, and for things like smoke (with thin, wispy strokes), or debris (scattered dots and/or scribbles). It was really cool experimenting with the different dots, putting more dote in some areas than in others, making them darker and creating depth. I feel like I’ve discovered a fun new toy to add to my arsenal (BWAHAHAHAHA)!

This was one of those rare times when everything in the drawing just sorta fell into place. Some drawings (like the one I’m working on right now ~RRRGH!) are so tough to make look right, as far as, you know, proportions n’ stuff. Others though, they just come out with very little problems at all (or maybe that’s just how it is for me, I dunno...).

I’d actually planned to finish a couple of other works before really starting on this one, but the whole thing came together so smoothly right from the wireframe that I went ahead and finished it first. (I even had time to color for once! YAAY!)

Gemma (a European Red Squirrel cub) and grub (her ultra-ULTRA cute stuffed cuddlebug^^) belong to ToddlerGirl.
Mandy (a Bunnykatt) is my own little bundle of fluff, but is based on my real-life partner, FoxyKittenGirll

…The snail is a paid method actor and had been duly compensated for his time. His name is Carl.
