Before Kai departs from the university for good, she leaves Cybie and her squadmates one gift (since it's just about right that she gives them one after receiving all the kind words from them). She summons Lum, her most precious spirit ball, and instructs him to stay with the squad while she's gone. It's a tough decision to do, and may be hard for the ball of sunshine, but it definitely hurts Kai more than it does him.
