Why Coyote is not of the sky by Ruskova

Crystala

Another piece drawn by Ruskova from my Faux Native American tales that support the campaign I ran.

The paintings are the newest, and have not faded with time. The brilliant colours help to tell the characters apart, and their shapes are weirdly twisted versions of the animals they represent.

The animals large and small are collected around a rock. They argue that the sky is not proper, for during the night there is only mother moon, and during the day, the sun. They all disagree over how it should look. First Hare stands tall and mighty, and says that they should accompany the sun in the sky. The snake says it would slither across the night and keep mother moon company whispering in her ear. The mighty Bear says that she and her cub could keep the both day and night warm and cheerful. Their bickering continues until all that can be heard is Coyote's laughter. He rolls and laughs, so great are his guffaws that it interrupts Fox who is trying to convince the crowd that his place in the day sky is assured. All eyes are upon Coyote when his laughter finally comes to an end.

Coyote, the crafty one that he is, unlike the rest does not try to convince them of his place. He tells them how he has stolen mother moon, and created the sun, and knows the shape of the sky. He tells each of the animals that yes, their place belongs above, and that they are so much better than he that they might each keep mother moon company. So each of the great animals was brought by coyote to meet mother moon, and each graced the night sky with their shape in the form of stars. Coyote took the animal's food and was pleased with himself. He now mocks the sky with his laughter at night.
