This canid Pokemon species was domesticated by ancient Hoenn hunter-gatherers to aid them in their pursuit of Grumpig. Their naturally dark pelts and keen senses allow them to hunt in total darkness, giving them a distinct advantage over their diurnal prey. Even after thousands of years of cohabitation with humans, the appearance and behavior of this species has remained tenaciously loyal to its roots.
Young Mightyenas are affectionately referred to as Poochyenas by modern breeders. Despite Hoenn’s temperate climate, their fluffy grey coat provides them a much-needed layer of insulation before they can properly regulate their body temperature. As they mature and begin to wander from their nest in pursuit of prey, this fluffy down will eventually be replaced by an oily black coat, ideal for slippery escapes from the claws of larger predators like Blaziken.
