Welcome Back Devon

CoffeeColoredBadger

Something more recent! Devon's been feeling better and more talkative in the group the past few days, so I decided to draw her sona to welcome her back in a bit. Then it just became a big ol' practice piece.

I was having trouble drawing housecats about a week before I did this one, weird as though it sounds since they're so simple. I was in the habit of making their noses too big and trying to give them proper snouts like they're big cats, but housecats don't have those. Caby says that she's had the urge to overstructure in the past and it definitely makes things look wonky, but yeah, that got me down a bit.

This Devon was a perfect opportunity to just go in and slam dunk drawing one, and she came out so good (and the pose surprisingly layered for something I did--I use tons of layers while I'm sketching to position stuff right), I decided to color and shade it too.

Shading was also an experiment! I was really inspired by a girl on toyhou.se I watch (not sure if she's on FA, definitely not on Weasyl), and she has this really awesome textured but painterly style sorta thing going on, so I tried layering shading, painting in the darkest bits first before going lighter and more diffuse across the body. It came out really really good! I've had multiple people tell me this looks like an old CD-ROM edutainment game, JumpStart or something like that, and I think I love that. Wild hearing things from my youth popping back up in my art like that unintentionally. Shows you how all subconscious influences can be...

I've got a lot more gift art and trades I wanna do with group folks before the month's out. Gonna go work on one today, actually, one for my girlfriend Caby~ <///<
