Mostly Blender. The base model is a sphere with a texture I drew in an image editor. This texture is blended with a procedural noise generator in Blender itself (the clouds-like patterns on the texture). Just above the base model is another 3D sphere simulating atmospheric haze (the purplish halo).

I've been looking into that program, my class has me working with 3Ds Max and there are some things about it i'm not a huge fan of. Thanks for letting me know i'll definitely need to look more into this program!
