The birds were chirping, the air was warm and scented with the smell of the blossoming flowers, and Celestia’s magnificent sun was shining down over all. Everything seemed to suggest today was going to be a remarkable day for the weary-eyed denizens of Ponyville.

Lyra and Bonbon where just out for a stroll, taking a particularly more scenic route on their way home after a quick lunch at the local café. Bonbon, the lovably stern but overly affectionate cream coloured mare thought they may have been served a little too much for what they paid - but she wasn’t going to complain. Lyra didn’t seem to have any complaints. So long as she was happy, Bonbon wistfully mused, eyeing her mint coloured partner, than I can be happy.

The both of them were trotting along merrily, light-heartedly trading off verses to one of there favorite songs when an inexplicable rumbling caused them to stop in their tracks.

Lyra paused curiously, ears perked as she tried to determine the source of the sound.

“Bons,” she said, twisting her head to look behind them, “What in Equestria was that?”

Bonbon simply stared off into the distance, her mind in complete disarray as the sky just above Foal Mountain seemed to turn brighter. She could barely make out the mountain range, it being hardly discernable from below the low treetops. The pony could feel her mouth drying as her ears flattened back. The earth pony could hardly utter a word. The clouds were parting fast as the brightness seemed to turned into a vivid red.

Lyra hopped her forehooves atop Bonbon’s sturdy flanks, perhaps to see a little better from such a low vantage point. The unicorn narrowed her eyes, judging the strange phenomenon.

Bonbon was frantically pounding the ground with her hooves, “Lyra, w- we should go. I don’t like this at all.”

“Look at that!” The unicorn shouted, hopping over the earth pony, darting around scarcely clustered trees.

A terrible ball of fire was hurdling across the sky, at incomprehensible speed. It was black and silver and white and as it cut through the sky, a column of fire was all that remained.

Both of the ponies stand there stricken, Lyra no longer astonished but now prickling with sick apprehension. Bonbon was cowering behind her, ears folded back.

This… this wasn’t right.

An painfully loud boom came screaming after the thing, as it rocketed southwards towards Ghastly Gorge. Next then came more of the low, distant rumbling and two mare could see, in all their horror, that there were more of these things.

Some smaller ones, some unspeakably larger. The two ponies screamed in unison as one of the cosmic missiles hit the lone peak where Canterlot was. The entire mountain exploded instantly into debris.

All around them, the two ponies could hear the distant, feeble cries from the ponies of Ponyville, no less as aghast as they themselves where.

The earth beneath them shook, it quaked as if some mad mare was taking to it with a gigantic hammer. The sky was alight with fire.

Bonbon’s face was a sick contortion of fear and confusion, as she and Lyra lay curled up on the road, no longer able to stand, only watching the trees around them fall. Animals were fleeing in every direction, but where was there to run?

The sun seemed to be blotted out from the sky by some titanic cloud, as the earth continued to quake beneath them.

Unbearably loud where the explosions beyond the Gorge, and south of the Everfree.

The two ponies breathlessly managed one last token of goodbye, before the land was consumed by a tidal wave of fire.
