The Lion of Lurcerne by Cameroo (critique requested)

The Lion of Lurcerne (critique requested)

Cameroo

The Lion of Lucerne. Part of an art assignment I had last year to learn values and construction. I'm fairly pleased with how it came out but I need to work on my textures. I feel like I learned a lot from this though.

Really awesome work here! You would be right, I think the face of the lion needs a little bit more texture. Just seems really smooth there. Well, the fur overall seems oddly smooth. I like the look of the mane, the armor and the spear in the back ground. I also like the muzzle of the lion, it looks really awesome and detailed.

That all being said, I am a writer, not a drawer. So don't hurt me if you don't like the critique, please!

I think you did well on establishing a good range of values, but the piece on whole has a very 'digital painting' look (i.e.: primary use of airbrushing/soft edges). There's also a sense of a lot of 'scrubbing' going on in your strokes (it's especially apparent in the highlights of the lion's paw and the rightmost shadows on the far-left shield). I think making use of a mix of hard and soft edges, as well as practice applying your values in as few strokes as possible would help you render more convincingly.

Thanks for the critique here. I really appreciate it! I'll see if I can't try to apply some of your suggestions here on the next piece I work on like this. :) I see where you're coming from. Especially in the claws. I'll see if I can find some good digital painting tutorials on Youtube here.
