Dead mystery meat is much better than running around meat. If only It was on the ground!

Just a little fan art of a Paramite. I really wanted to try a front face instead of a profile like they are usually found. The background I left very plain- I liked it just silhouetted- sort of a paper cut look.

I think i should have made the lighting a bit stronger, he sort of stands out against the cave. It can be a little lesson; always work on the foreground and background together! In this case it was a "here is a critter lets make a background" thing which is really rare for me personally!

Fan Art can be a little addictive <3 The hard work like design is done, back-stories done, palettes done. Not knocking down anyone who works exclusively with Fan Art/OC's ~ I just want practice with all those little things Fan Art already covers, mostly design. Even if you do the characters up in your own style that foundations still already solid.

So in short you can expect the next Fan Art in... Well I can't even give a date, But it will be even better! I just thought I'd leave a little explanation before anyone's listing off other creatures I need to do, which i love, as long as you know it may not be awhile ;3

I just noticed the crazy texturing on the paramite. I love all those gross veins and bumps. Not only is it really effective visually, but it looks like it was a lot of fun to do. I really like how well you managed shading among all that, too. Intricate textures sometimes throw me off when it comes time to shade the broader forms they cover.

That's a good observation regarding fan art. It's easy to focus on elements beyond creature design when you've already got something to draw from, even if you do end up embellishing or stylizing it, and that can be very helpful sometimes. You pulled off the shape of the head-thing really well, especially for a frontal view. I'm not sure I would have been brave enough for that. For some reason I'm really drawn to the shading along the bottom of the tongue and the bottom... finger... pedipalp... thing.

The only tiny nitpick I have is the relative lack of shadow around where he comes in contact with the ground.

Thanks <3 I think with the bottom it became that same old issue where when i start to paint on the shadows suddenly I lose my rocky floor I was fussing with so much, even thou you cant really see the details at this web friendly size. I think i just need to practice letting go stuff like that- I mean it took awhile but overall it probably would have been better to ground the paramite.

Even the paramite himself could have used stronger shadows but then I'd lose his vein fun, same as the floor.

I think I'll just have to add in the shadows first and really establish all that. Then I will know whats going to be lost right away and not spend so much time in those spaces :3

Yeah, it's real tricky. I think that's what I meant when I mentioned having trouble. I always end up covering the majority of whatever texture I just spent hours on. Though I really especially like how you pulled it off at the bottom-most part of the creature where it gets really dark and only the most prominent bumps and such show through. I think, even with some of it not visible, it's a lot more effective by having done that. Especially with a creature whose anatomy is kind of crazy and unfamiliar, it helps the viewer tease all those limbs apart a bit better.

Anyway, yeah, I can empathize! It's about sacrifices sometimes, I guess. It's the same story whenever I want to draw a creature on top of a background, it's like, "Ugh, get out of the way, there was something really intriguing back there and you're just standing in front of it."

Exactly~Like I saved a version without the other layers http://oi58.tinypic.com/2enswte.jpg So I still technically have my work I did but when it comes to sharing its like "Now I wish people could see all this part too" like you mentioned. I could always upload both but that feels like it would be a bother to some people.

Your're right about the underside it is working pretty nice. I guess with the sort of spooky atmosphere you'd expect more of that mystery all over. I tend to try and take peoples hands too much, I like everything detailed so that they will know exactly what I was thinking of. The only thing that makes it ambiguous in most cases is when i make the anatomy wonky.

I guess basically lighting is still one of my greatest enemies. Soon i'll get it thou!
