Cavern of the Crawler by Caelan

Cavern of the Crawler

Caelan

It’s finally done! This was a huge learning piece for me, so it took quite a while… But I’m glad to finally have it all in there as I envisioned it!

This is concept art for Booty Hunters, an indie game in development which is perfectly aware and embracing of the absurdity of it’s title.

    Makes me think of the Centurion enemy from Resident Evil 0.

      Hm, I can't say I've ever played any Resident Evil games- mostly it is just a very over-sized centipede. :}

    This is an amazing piece! Really love the subtle rainbow you've incorporated into each of the waterfalls. That said, my one and only critique for this is that the darker wall closest to the viewer on the right feels a little out of place. You've got so much detail everywhere else, and yet the wall there falls just a little short. I think, perhaps, adding a little more of the reflective light from the pool of water in the same vein that you have it reflecting off the centipede might bring it all together. Other then that, I think you did a fantastic job on illustrating the ambiance and texture of everything. :D

      Oh, thanks so much! You make a really good point, I think. I'll have to see about playing with that some and seeing how it affects the piece. I really appreciate your in depth comment! :D

    Wah!~ This is just gorgeous. :3 The way you've done the falling streams & grassy areas make it come together so well. Terrific job, as always!

      Ahh thank you! It took a lot of fiddling with things to balance the foliage and the rocks, but it was worth the time spent.

    This is lovely. The arthropod gods would be pleased with this dignified depiction.

      Hah! Why thank you. I am glad to know I have satisfied their tastes.

    Everything about this delights me. Everything. But I have to remark upon the lighting: the differences between the lighting above the ledge and below the ledge really, really works in this piece, separating the centipede from the rock climbers/cave explorers in a way that is clear but not jarring.

      Ahh, thank you so much for the kind comment! <3 I really appreciate it. Doing more interesting dramatic lighting situations is something I want to try more often going forward, too :)

    Awesome work! It almost makes me want to go there despite the crawlers.

    The link in the description (http://www.volcaniclightninggames.com/) isn't working for me. Is it now http://www.volitegames.com/ ?

      Whoops, thanks for letting me know! Yeah, that changed in the last year.
