RACE: Arditians (first draft) by B Pavlica (critique requested)

RACE: Arditians (first draft)
Name: Arditians
Habitat: Planetoid Ardit
Spoken languages: ’English’ and Arditian
Lifespan: 60-80 years

Diet: They can eat most of the common Drejont food without any consequences, but it happens much more regularly for Arditians to be lactose intolerant. Their traditional food consists of a lot of various vegetables and lesser amounts of meat, however eating a lot of meat can’t harm an Arditian.

Intelligence: Arditians share the same level of intelligence as Drejontians (read: humans).

Physiology:
Arditians are a particularly interesting race for the Drejontian scientists to research, due to two major reasons:
1) They don’t see themselves as men or women, as there are no such things among them - they are all hermaphrodites, all have a male and female reproductive systems and only have one gender.
2) If they aren’t exposed to the Khronlight or artificial Khronlight (a unique type of light that radiates from the star Khron), their body, save of their eyes, is entirely invisible.

A typical Arditian is 5’6” (~168 cm) tall with a masculine torso and feminine, curvy hips and legs. Some are curvier than others, and some are more masculine than others, but extra masculinity or femininity is commonly reached through ways such as working out or eating the right type of food, it somewhat rarely comes naturally.
They most often have either gender-wise unidentifiable voices, and sometimes they do lean more towards feminine, but Arditians with a strictly masculine voice do not exist.

They have both reproductive organs, and all of them are capable of giving birth, but after bearing one child, an Arditian is naturally not capable of ever giving birth again. In the past the Arditians families therefore commonly only had up to two kids(if both parents gave birth), but in the current time, with the help of modern medicine, they managed to find ways to produce more children, and have therefore possibly saved their kind from extinction.

Psychology:
The Arditians are sociable enough among themselves, but seem to be very unsure about anyone who’s not from their home planetoid.
The Arditians don’t seem to be mentally very different from the Drejontians (read: humans), and while they have the intelligence to build the same things as Drejontians, they don’t have the materials to do so, which was why the people of Ardit were at first recognized as a more primitive culture, which was later re-written in the Drejontian encyclopaedia.

As mentioned before, Arditians are extremely similar to the common folk of Drejont, but they seem to be generally more confident if they are exposed to the Khronlight. Many Arditians suffers anxiety and discomfort when they are invisible.

History & Culture:
Before the Drejontian explorers reached their home planetoid, the Arditians lived in very primitive towns. They lived in tents or wooden houses, some built their shelters with rocks, but that kind of a shelter was not particularly popular, due to its instability.
The planetoid, being not far from the star Khron, is a very warm place to live, with very rare precipitation, which is why the people of Ardit were capable of living without a roof above their head for most of the time.

While they were not particularly skilled with architecture, the Arditians were progressive in other ways. They dressed well, using leather and materials from their planetoid, which resembled silk and cloth. They were also very skilled with medicine, astronomy and philosophy.

Religion-wise, most of the Arditians are godless, but all of them acknowledge the star Khron as extremely important and worthy - however while most realize that it’s but a star, a few of the Arditians seem to actually worship it as some sort of a god.
The religion, later titled as ‘Khronism’ describes Khron as a loving, divine parent of Ardit, who watches over the planetoid constantly, and if it would die, everything would disappear – this belief obviously comes from the fact that when the star is not visible, which happens once a month, the Arditians are also not visible, and the religious individuals then tend to turn to fasting for two days (one day before the eclipse and the day of the eclipse).

When the Drejontians arrived to Ardit they came in peace, to discover new things rather than look for wealth. The unique physiology of the Arditians quite soon sparked their attention, and after making a deal of cooperation with the Arditian chiefs, they returned to the planetoid often, using it as some sort of a friendly station during their travels.
They brought many new things and technology to Ardit, which the Arditians accepted and have since then heavily adapted. While some Arditians still live in wooden houses, most have already taken advantage of the new architectural knowledge that was provided by the explorers from Drejont.

Drejontians have also brought English language to Ardit, and it has since then became widely spoken across the small planetoid, as most Arditians tend to speak two languages – Arditian and English.
The cooperation between Drejontians and the Arditians lasted for several decades, until the old Drejontian government was replaced, and the new rule decided that too many resources are wasted for expeditions from Drejont to the distant Ardit, especially since Ardit didn’t provide much in return.

A long time has passed since then, and Ardit has become much less known than it used to be, which does not bother the commonly shy Arditians too much.
Several travel agencies of Drejont offer trips to Ardit, parts of which are very popular with tourists, due to the planetoid’s warm atmosphere.
But while many Drejontians tend to spend holydays on Ardit, it happens very rarely for an Arditian to leave their home, even though Drejontians have created artificial Khronlight, which enables the Arditians to be visible when on Drejont.

Beliefs and mythology (will be updated)
°The Khronblind
Some superstitious Arditians believe in so-called 'Khronblind', or 'punished ones'. The concept is similar to what we know as ghosts, but instead of dying and coming back to life as invisible creatures, the Arditian Khronblind are supposedly people who did such unforgivable things, that Khron did not want to set it's eye upon them anymore. That resulted in them losing their appearance and being forced to walk the earth invisible. Religious Arditians believe in Khronblind, as well as many supersticious Arditians.

Fashion
°Clothing
Arditian fashion mostly rotates around green and brown, and they pretty much always use Khronlets as decorations.
Khronlets are stones which are very often found on Ardit. They are orange and rather shiny.
It's in the nature of Arditians to lean towards tight-fitting clothing, and they often wear very thin leggings, long thin gloves and some sort of a mask that covers the sides and the back of their head, but doesn't cover the face at all. They wear these three things to remain visible if they were to go inside a building that doesn't have Khronlight.
Their most traditional piece of clothing is a white shirt made of silk, and it's often included in the designs of the Arditian fashion designers.
Here are two examples of modern Arditian clothing.

°Hair
Arditians often have brown hair, but the lightness and saturation of it can differ quite a lot, from dark nearly greyish-brown to ginger.
Traditionally and fashionably, Arditans prefer to have short hair.
Here are some hairstyles and colours.

Basic profile for my race of aliens.

As the title suggest, this is merely the first draft. Questions help me with development, so they are very welcome!

From an evolutionary standpoint, only being able to birth a single child throughout an entire lifespan is detrimental to a species' survival. Think of it like this: a couple producing two children is considered zero growth (population-wise), where a couple producing a single child is considered negative growth (the next generation has a lower population than the generation before it). Unless they came upon the technology early in their evolution (or lost the ability to produce multiple children later in evolution), the Arditians would have gone extinct rather quickly. Sorry if I'm repeating something you already thought about.

I was thinking about the latter thing you said, yes, them losing the ability to have multiple kids later in their evolution. I kinda think of them as pandas in a way, when they were normal at first, then came near to extinction but have since grown out of danger due to the new technology provided by Drejontians.

Kinda forgot to put this in there, lol
