Sketch commission from deyvarah deyvarah

This was commissioned as a gift for my friend jakthedrox jakthedrox. One would think that artists would be set for character art, because they can just draw their character whenever they want. But real life, commissions, time pressure and all the other complications people have means they actually don't get to see their characters any more (and maybe even less) than non-artists. And just like everyone else, they enjoy seeing different interpretations of their character by different artists. So when Deyvarah mentioned an interest in doing a dragon character... well. This is the result.

Here we have the cheetah and Jak's drox character about to take on some baddies in Skyrim-inspired armor. They are eyeing each other, probably thinking something like "the one who gets the fewest kills is buying the first round of drinks". Or "I hope you don't suck at this". "Do I have enough magicka for thunderbolt?" Or something similar.

If you haven't already, go check out the artist's page - she does awesome work and is a nice person to work with.

The cheetah is copyright to me, the drox to jakthedrox jakthedrox and of course the art is by deyvarah deyvarah

... I think it says something sad about my mind, when the first thing I thought when I saw this was the line from "Army of Two."

"WE'RE SURROUNDED, BACK TO BACK!" lol

Heh - that's not bad at all. When I first saw the concept sketch, something else jumped into my mind (helped by someone who saw the sketch and asked a question) >_>. But after seeing the finished work, all I can think of is... I hope that drox is readying magic, and not just planning to slap whatever they're fighting silly :-)

Well, his expression is certainly ala-Skyrim. The phrase coming to mind is "Doublecast, baby!" xD

LOL - good point. Or that annoyingly long charge for the Master level spells!

Cripes, no kidding! Yeeeah... there's a reason I play an assassin. XD

            • Link

The thing I love about Skyrim is ... why choose? Get all the skills! Assassin arch-mage!

              • Link

Indeed! I typically end up with massively high sneak, archery, smithing, lockpicking, one-handed and restoration. The rest? Mostly stay at 15. lol

I do like how you can work on different skills though, and aren't constrained by a class system. So if I want my magic using Khajiit to practice with a bow... not a problem! But yeah, I think everyone has some skills that just aren't very attractive (to them).

Yeah, they really did improve that, although it took some of the interesting bits out of character creation, I think. Aside from the powers, it really removed a lot of the distinction between the races. Feels a lot more console-ish and less computer-ish, I think, like this one was a console game ported to computer. GOOD port, unlike some of them, but still a port. It annoyed me quite a bit, though, how many skill points you had to spend on utter CRAP to get to the couple skills you actually used, though.

Yes, that is probably the most common complaint against Skyrim. I would also have liked to see more differentiation between the races, but as Todd Howard said early on, they didn't want to punish the player for any decision they made (and you can see that throughout the game - there are almost no decisions that you can't "undo" later on). And that is quite the contrast to Morrowind - where one wrong decision (kill an important NPC) could ruin the whole game.

The skill progression is another area. It doesn't matter what you focus on, you can be uber at everything if you put the time in. That does feel console-ish.

But, keep in mind that if Bethesda didn't cater to the masses, there wouldn't be a game at all. So it's a difficult balancing act. And overall, Skyrim is still one of all-time favorite games.

They certainly did a good job with it! The interface is a lot smoother than Morrowind, for sure, and I really like that they did a better job of actually adding ways OUT of the dungeons without having to run back through the entire thing just to leave after it's cleared. I really did like enchanting and creating spells before, though... Eh, guess they can't please everyone. I'd REALLY like to see Morrowind re-made in Skyrim's engine, and with some of the improvements, but without being quite so console-ized.

Yeah, but the improvements like the interface and "quick exits" from the dungeons were both concessions to the console version! Not that I didn't also appreciate them.

I agree - the two things I really think were missing from Skyrim were more depth to the various plot lines, and the players ability to influence the world. Sure, you could play the main quest, but no matter what you did - the world essentially ended up the same. Also, a lot of the depth on the various side-skills (like enchanting) were kind of simplified and dumbed down for console use. I think they could have struck a better balance between console simplicity, and long, complex side quests. I guess they need better AI so the NPCs can just kind of "get on with their lives" no matter what kind of havoc the player creates in the world!

I guess we'll get to see if Bethesda agrees in, what about 2-3 years from now with the next installment in the series? :-)

I think it really comes down to there needing to be two versions of a game, because the half-baked thing ALWAYS leaves a bit of a bad taste for one group or the other. They pulled enough awesome with Skyrim that everyone plays it anyway, (including me), but it'd definitely be BETTER with a bit less console...

And yeah, have to see what they bring out! ... I'll probably be in line to buy that one too. lol

                            • Link

Yeah, I'll be in that line too.

And I agree, it would be nice if they could figure out some way to allow the player to set some options so the game ranged from casual console player to hardcore gamer. And not just a difficulty slider. Some people just want hack-and-slash. Some want role playing. Some want puzzles. Some just want to walk around and see the scenery. Skyrim did a great job of appealing to all those different groups (and more!) pretty well. I'm hoping they can do even better next time!
