Undying Steeds

BeakyBeast

Whew it took a long while but I finally got this done. WIP shots can be seen on my tumblr, this was a great exercise all around, especially since these two were the first horses I've really sat down and drawn out/painted.... And admittedly they're my first horse OC characters! They're used for muscle/flavor on the RP site I'm on, but I've thought of some backstory for them too before they were turned undead along with personalities and behavioral stuff.

So, I suppose they would count as OCs.

The muscle detailing was fun, figuring out how to do a black coat with green highlights was an interesting puzzle that was satisfying and surprisingly easy once figured out.

That out of the way, the one on the left is called Samhain, the one on the right is called Angemort.

Daily reminder to call your local paladin or priest so the undead filth can purged.

I dunno man, undead things are pretty cool. I'd turn into a Lich any day.

Goodness me, don't tell me you're an undead sympathizer?! Don't make me call a paladin to inspect your quarters for any undead you might be hiding!

Joking aside, what exactly is the story behind these two?

Oh boy, it's a bit of a long story, so bear with me.

To start off, the undeath they utilize is the 2000ad version, where they still retain their minds and free-will, and their bodies get taller and stronger and very green. Plus there's some supernatural stuff that they can do. Samhain can do some fast traveling, Angemort is supernaturally strong and sturdy. She's like a mountain.

In the RP they're used in, they were turned undead for the purpose of an efficient and low maintenance means for transportation/muscle. Then from there they were sort of turned out to pasture after their original purpose could no longer be fulfilled, so they sort of act as creepy country flavor to a farmhouse a character of mine stays in. Samhain (left) got an aggressive sadistic streak and supernatural traveling powers after turning undead. So she tends to be the more dangerous one of the two, I like to call her Murder-Horse. Her "job" at the farm is essentially security and pest control when she's not needed to pull or haul anything heavy. Angemort (right) mostly stayed the same as she did when alive, she likes to graze, amble around, and occasionally steal hats. Also she hardly gets off the farm that often to go anywhere since she's not as fast as Samhain, so when she gets to travel she gets all excited for it. On the farm she's used for labor as well, but she also acts as a nanny to the resident lamb. She's also not as clever as Samhain, so she doesn't so much get into trouble as follow Samhain into it... This tends to be why she's on lamb-nanny duty or some other job that holds her attention, to avoid that situation.

When they used to be alive, they were just average draft horses, Samhain was a Percheron or a mix of percheron and something else, Angemort was a Belgian.

Pretty interesting stuff, you seemed to have put a lot of thought into their roles.

Whoa. I love unique looking monsters and this is really well done anatomically. Undead but unique construction.

Thanks! It took a bunch of refs to get that anatomy down.
