Physiology, Habitat, & Reproduction

Oflufs are a mountain-dwelling species with long snouts and bulky bodies. They do not have teeth, but rather hard ridges used for cracking open or crushing nuts, which is their main source of sustenance. They have also been rarely known to eat berries, or in times of hardship or during the winter, rocks or even minerals. Their jaws are strong enough to crush even diamonds. The feet of an Ofluf are squarish with big pads, and they have strong, knobby ankles. These are to help them jump & scale the mountain faces they call home. Their toes feature large, flat yet sharp claws used for tunneling through rock.

They make their homes in the sides of cliff faces in the mountains. Their claws allow them to dig out hollow burrows. This is where they sleep and spend a lot of their time. In the winter, a lot of Oflufs fill their burrows with any soft bedding they can find, from feathers to cotton, etc., and hibernate for the winter. Those who choose not to hibernate are the Oflufs who commonly feed on stones and minerals which are more readily available than nuts and berries in the winter. Their stomachs are built to digest them, but it takes much longer and is harder on their bodies.

The most distinguishing feature of an Ofluf is its fur. Because they live in the mountains where it is frequently chilly and snowy, they have a coating of fine fur that gets extremely thick around their chest, where most of their vital organs lie. Without this fur, an Ofluf would not be able to survive.

Oflufs reproduce sexually. There is a fairly high percentage of intersex Ofluf, up to as much as 60% of Oflufs are intersex. Another odd thing is that the sex organs of male and female Oflufs are almost reversed compared to what most animals have. The male Ofluf has inner testes, but also a vagina and uterus, whereas a female has ovaries, but also a penis. The female implants the male with an egg, the male fertilizes it, and then the male carries the child and gives live birth like most mammals. Intersex Oflufs have fully functional sex organs of both sexes, but cannot impregnate themselves (as there are physical limitations that don't allow them to penetrate themselves).

Fur Thickness, Colours, and Markings

The most common type of fur on an Ofluf manifests in thick, swirly puffs. Slightly more uncommon is a fluff that looks reminiscent of cotton balls. The rarest type is a light shag, and many of the few Oflufs that end up with the light shag choose to live closer to the base of mountains where it is warmer and drier.

Oflufs can come in a wide variety of colours and there's no one scheme they're limited to. As they can tunnel into mountains for safety, they have no natural predators really and no need to hide. However, all Oflufs feature a distinctive pattern that covers at the very least their throats and down the front of their chests (see the above guide for a better example of where the patterns can appear). The patterns vary, but the majority take on the patterns of fabric, like paisley, plaid, etc. (not all of them must, but it is the most common).

Their tongues are striped, and the pads of their feet are the same colours as the tongue.
