St Augustine's, Hedon by Aremay

St Augustine's, Hedon

Aremay

St Augustine's in Hedon is marketed as the "King of Holderness" to Patrington's Queen; yet, as Simon Jenkins says, it's probably a shotgun marriage. This massive structure dominates the middle of its market town just beyond the Eastern reaches of Hull, stalwart and square.

It's hard to talk about this church without feeling despondent. It is all bowing walls, cracked stone work, peeling paint and plaster and a general feeling of abandonment; marooned on top of its lonely mound by the receding tide of the community that once worshipped here. The arch ways to lost chapels have been sealed up with big, square blocks like a breeze block wall and the key resides in a local shop that didn't know which door it served. St Augustine's is a warning sign along a dark road for many of these buildings; where you can end up stumbling too if you don't invest time, money and love in these places.
