Well I use Adobe Lightroom to process my photos. It has a section that lets you adjust specific colors like red by their hue, saturation and luminosity. I tend to increase the saturation enough to "overpower" any other colors that might be bleeding in, then I lower the luminosity to bring out more details. It takes a little bit of fiddling with it to get the desired look.
