Introducing Black Opal, an unusual and unstable fusion of Pearl and Amethyst! Black opal as a gemstone is one of the tackiest bling-bling rocks I’ve ever seen, partially explaining the gross palette.

Had a dream about a post-apoc Steven Universe AU, and this was the only gem that I remembered. The basic gist of the AU is that Steven pulled a Rip van Winkle and just disappeared for five years. When he finally returns, he finds that Beach City (and maybe the world) has been taken over, not by Homeworld, but by another civilization in opposition to Homeworld. The Gems slowly become semi-corrupted and more monstrous as a result of fighting back against the invaders, leading to fusions like this.

As you might imagine, it was quite wanky. Also the Gems moved the temple to an underwater cave below Beach City for reasons, and Lars and Sadie were there, also because of reasons.

Oddly, I don’t remember Pearl and Amethyst’s post-apoc designs, so I may have to work backwards and design them. I find the idea of two gems that formerly had a stable fusion forming an unstable one as a result of fighting fascinating. It reminds me a bit of Digimon, where depending on how you treat your digital monster, they can end up being quite monstrous indeed.
