Vampirella Page Shred

angeltigress03

A redraw of a comic page from Vengeance of Vampirella as posted to a blog (and at time of writing waiting for approval) on tumblr that I follow known as Escher Girls that pokes fun at really bad comic art and how objectified some characters are in comic books (most of the characters in question being women).

I'm really not impressed with the art at all and it amazes me that the artists in the industry can get by with such badly drawn (and in my opinion) unprofessional schlock. I've seen a lot of comics by non-professional artists that are heavily stylized yes, but at least the art itself follows the basic guidelines you would learn in an art class or school.

And comic art (like most sequential art) is touchy because these images are supposed to be telling a story. Honestly had it not been mentioned in the post I saw on EG (found here) where the second person posting talked about what was actually supposed to be happening in the page (Supposedly Vampirella was supposed to be morphing her clothes and destroying the building), I would not have had any idea. The pose is not dynamic enough to suggest she's even trying to destroy the building. Mostly the whole setup of the page is like a bad joke - Ass shot ass shot ass shot ass shot ass shot - Money shot. Which is great if that's all you're aiming for, but this is supposed to be telling some sort of plot.

It fails at the most basic of graphic storytelling, of which a big rule is "Show, don't tell."

If we're going to make the comics industry about objectification then let's cut the foreplay. If Vampirella can be this obvious about sex, then I want a comic book with Trojan Man as the fucking hero. Seriously.

So I took the thing and shredded it critique wise and redrew the money shot pose to make it better fit what the action was supposed to show.

Hell, she'd probably be able to pull off the original pose as a fembot, but it still wouldn't make this art any less stupid looking.

Redraw and goofy dialog is mine.
