Been To the Wars

Amagire

A woodlouse hunter, Dysdera crocata. I rescued this one from my cat. Those giant chelicerae and fangs are actually for prising open land isopods: they're one of the few arthropods that prey on sowbugs/pillbugs/woodlice. People often mistake these (well, and any brownish or greyish spider) for brown recluses, but the color on the carapace is almost a garnet red. They're beautiful spiders and I love finding them.

It looks similar to the Brown Recluse Spider. That's enough to make this little fellow very scary.

      1. Not really, certainly not more so than many other common brownish spiders. The jaws of a woodlouse hunter are very distinctive, making it one of the few spiders that's easy to visually identify without magnification.
      2. The danger that brown recluse spiders present is wildly overstated to the point of total fabrication, even if you happen to live within their very limited range. Pay attention to the "recluse" part of the name and recalibrate your threat assessment.
      3. I get "this random brown spider looks JUST LIKE A BROWN RECLUSE" commentary on my spider photos, regardless of species depicted, really a hell of a lot, so if this comment seems brusque or argumentative to you, please factor that in. I recognize that the vast antipathy toward and ignorance of spiders that society encourages is not your fault; however, I will not allow it to be perpetuated in my space.

Sorry, no need to get aggressive. I was just trying to open some conversation.
