This would be back around the time where Mich and Fred first meet.

They meet because Rene is attending Pokémon Academy (P Acad) in Hoenn and she ended up becoming good friends with Fredrick. He helped her get accustomed to the culture shock and being surrounded by uppity rich people XD;

It's a bit of a problem because they are both interested in Rene.

I've never really figured things out so well between them. But overall Rene's residual feelings for Micheal tend to get in the way of her being able to fully commit to Fredrick in any way.
Generally I have it so Fredrick accepts this.
But the relationship between Rene and Micheal is really complicated on so many levels and is a story in and of itself that I haven't completely written out yet.

Overall though it seems to be that Fredrick is all for comforting Rene (he's a player and ends up having her as a hang up).

So added into their already existing dislike for each other, their jealousy of one another for Rene doesn't help their relationship from being negative.
