AAAAAAAAAH~ IT'S SO GOOD!

He doesn't tout it much, but Aevery is actually a lich, whose magical expertise lies in shadowfrost magic. While frost magic is accessible enough, in his world shadow magic is highly illegal.. or it would be, if it wasn't largely forgotten. At a young age, Aevery took it upon himself to hunt down any and all books and scrolls he could find on the subject, and reconstruct a spell from whatever he can find.
Just a single spell, no matter how simple, would be a breakthrough in rediscovering more of that old magic. Before he figured it out, he'd spend many a night buried in books ranging from advanced spellcasting to forbidden scrolls to children's stories, anything that could possibly have a lead.
