Krokuta female by Abbi Normal

Krokuta female

Abbi Normal

Some art for a concept I've been throwing around, of a race of hyena-like creatures similar to standard gnolls (though that would be an insult in the setting, almost a racial epithet) called Krokuta. Physically, there's not much to to say, aside from being hyena people (though they are extremely large: even the smallest males would be head and shoulders over the tallest humans), the main characterizing stuff is in their culture, language, technology (and lack thereof), and the setting they live in. I have much of that written already, I'll talk about it more when I've got more of it done.

For example, those weapons, the long knife on her hip and the spear. The spear is a martial weapon, its hunting-oriented counterpart being weighted with stone instead of metal. Steel is a material they prefer not to work with unless needed, and it's more or less reserved for machinery and military-use weapons and armours. The knife on her hip is serrated to do extreme damage when withdrawn, like a porcupine's quill, and being carved of bone, is designed to break off inside the flesh, and work its way futher in by its spines. The doubled tip on the head of the spear, also bone, serves a similar purpose, and this design is a trademark of their traditional weaponry. This is because their tactics, in both hunting and battle, tend to be to attack from ambush, do as much damage as fast as they can, then either escape before taking casualties or allow the prey or enemy to escape. Then, they follow the blood trail to the body at the end, and use its bones to make new spearheads and long knives. Also, the symbol on her hip and armour is her clan's sigil, and represents a vulture's bleached skull in front of a bright sun, which is also why she wears the vulture skull totem necklace.

Their faith is best described as shamanic animism. They believe in a cadre of gods, many of them localized to different regions, that personify different concept important to or affecting Krokuta. The honoured dead who lived worthy lives, according to the judgement of the gods, would be brought up to join them. Krokuta referred to them, the gods and the dead together, as BoneClan. If you died and were judged unworthy by BoneClan, they would fall upon you and devour you instead.
