In poultry terms, the term ‘bantam’ simply means a smaller variety of a particular breed of chicken. It’s derived from the Banten Province, Java (formally Bantam), which was once a bustling seaport where sailors would stock up on the smaller chickens for travel. The roosters were often used in cock fighting due to their speed and small size.
