Darker Yet Darker - pt.2 by Kent-chan

Two

Gaster sighed, putting down his clipboard. Everything was in place; he had run countless simulations to ensure the safety of his subject, but he was still incredibly nervous.
It was the first time he would have to experiment on a monster.
"You're...sure about this?" Gaster asked. The subject has already taken a seat underneath a large mechanical construct before Gaster even had to explain anything.
"Absolutely, Doctor!" He exclaimed excitedly, wide eyes beaming back at the head scientist. "Helping out the monster that built as something great as the core? Of course I want to be a part of anything you're working on!"
He still hesitated, "Even putting yourself at such a risk like this? It was already so much of me to ask for volunteers for this in the first place..."
"You're a brilliant scientist, Doctor! I have my wholehearted faith in this."
Gaster sighed. The thought that the king had to make decisions like this everyday was daunting to him-how did Asgore do it?
"Very well." He moved around to the other side of a large desk; multiple monitors hooked up to it. "Relax and close your eyes. Think about your favorite time when you were on the surface." Gaster keyed in commands to the computer. The machine above the test subject hummed to life. With a press of a button, live feedback printed endlessly out of a small slot.
Gaster picked up the end and skimmed over it as it continued to print; everything was normal.
"Alright." He murmured under his breath, and pressed a button to start the machine. It glowed white in response.
Gaster kept a close eye on the readings, everything was normal just like previous simulations he had ran. "Alright," Gaster looked up over the monitor at the test subject, "Now can you-"
He was cut short at a loud burst of energy. The room blared white, and Gaster was knocked back into the wall.
It took a moment for Gaster to regain the air that was knocked out of him, before he realized: the subject.
Gaster was back on his feet and stumbling towards the computer before he could see straight. He hurriedly snatched the live feedback, and squinted through his still blurred vision at the latest feedback.
Nothing was printing.
He snapped his eyes up at the subject.
The chair was empty.
"No..." He looked back down, the reading had stopped as soon as the blast of energy had happened. "No, no no no no NO NONONONO-!" He slammed his fists down into the table. He reached a hand out and touched the middle of his chest, checking his soul.
He had gained a lvl.
Gaster screamed in frustration. It wasn't supposed to happen like this, he had ran the tests so many times, how did this happen how how how-
"Woah, easy there doc."
Gaster whirled around at the new figure standing in the doorway.
"There's a lot of noise in here today; what's up?"
'What's up?' That was all his assistant had to say when his experiment had backfired so badly? His subject was gone without a trace, he had no idea what had happened with the feedback not picking it up, he had committed a level of violence on top of all that and-
The blank expression on their face made Gaster realize he had reverted back into his old speaking ways and they couldn't understand what he was saying.
He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself to speak properly. His shoulders slumped instead, and Gaster sank to his knees and then the floor, burying his face in his hands, "They're gone..."
"Gone? You scared them off with all that science talk?"
His voice broke, "No...Sans, they're gone..."
A heavy silence hung in the air.
