Needle Felted Tengu Mask by Zipps

Needle Felted Tengu Mask

Zipps

Hey all! I like to needle felt too!

I'm not super experienced, so this is definitely the biggest project I've taken on so far, and honestly I'm pretty proud of how it turned out! I wanted to see if it was feasible to make a mask out of felt, and more on that later, but for the future this guy's probably gonna end up displayed on my wall. Sadly he's pretty asymmetrical, I finished the side that has the detail shot a few months ago and then put the project down, so by the time I picked him back up I'd forgotten quite how I did all the little details and it didn't turn out the same. Still, from a distance he looks pretty cool. Here's hoping my next project gets finished all at once!

As for the whole mask thing. Even though this guy isn't really 'wearable', he doesn't conform to your face and the eye holes are abysmal, I think there's real promise in making wearable masks with felt. This one is extremely lightweight, and even though the beak is solid wool it's actually very easy to breathe in and not very hot. The material is scratchy of course, but that could easily be fixed with a softer lining.

My next project is probably going to be a neat wolf mask. I want to really try hard to work in more detail, smooth the surface out more and make it a real wearable piece. I also want to test and see how embroidering the wool works out, because I think it'd be a really neat way to add detail. Should I upload progress pics when I get started?

Also wondering if anybody would be interested in buying OOAK pieces like this. I might be sad to give my babies up when I put so much work into them, but a bat's gotta eat!

(Side note, I am possibly willing to take felt commissions! However, as my supplies are limited and shipping is difficult, it'll be on a case by case basis and I can't give any sort of ballpark as to price. Let me know if you're interested and we'll chat about it!)
