URGENT - Mac OBS using over 100 CPU??? by SpartaDog

I'm so frustrated with this I'm practically shaking so

Photoshop started lagging while I stream out of literally no where. To the point where it's unworkable. My strokes don't appear until a full second after I've made them.

I opened the Activity Monitor. OBS is now using over 110% CPU. Sometimes it drops to 70-something, once I even got it down to 50 and 20, but as soon as I actually started broadcasting it shot right back up to 80+.

I uninstalled and reinstalled OBS and restarted my computer several times. I tried lowering all of my settings but nothing has had any substantial effect. I got rid of my face cam since apparently using that can up the CPU. Got it down to the 30s, until I started broadcasting. Right back up to 100.

This is a recent problem. It only started lagging yesterday. Before that I never had any issues whatsoever.

UPDATE i got it down to an average 70 - 80, but it's still impossible to work PS. I have already tried these:

  • uninstalling/reinstalling OBS
  • restarting computer
  • lowering OBS resolution & settings
  • removing webcam
  • uninstalling ~20 unnecessary applications
  • manually removing leftovers & plist files for several unused applications
  • clearing Photoshop's cache
  • clearing desktop of 90% of non-essential files to open up storage
  • downloading previous versions of OBS (for some reason no matter which I download it automatically upgrades to 11.2)
  • changing stream path to Tigerdile instead of Picarto

It must be something between OBS and Photoshop, because OBS by itself is comfortable at 20% or so. But as soon as I turn on window capture, it jumps to 40 - 60% and just keeps climbing.

I didn't realize over 100% CPU use was even possible...

I wish I had something more helpful to contribute. Perhaps try using a slightly older version of OBS? Sometimes upgrades break things that were working fine. I mean, if it's on version 3.3.5 or something try using version 3.3.2 or whatever (just an example, numbers are totally made up)

I mention that because on my system, the most recent version of VLC runs like garbage but using the most recent previous version runs just fine...

Oddly enough, on OBS itself, it still says I'm only around 20-30% or so. It's only the computer's activity monitor that says it's over 100.

Your computer broke. How do you use more than whats available?

It's percentage of a single CPU (or core). A dual-core system will have 200% CPU available. (The percentages may not add up precisely because of the way the usage is sampled, and it's sometimes misleading as seen in the Chrome Helper figures in the screenshot.)

SpartaDog, did you change the screen resolution at all, or if you have dual monitors did you change the arrangement? More pixels = more work for OBS.

i am so sorry you are going thru this... it's not as bad for me because i don't rely on my computer for work, but i've had similar issues for the past couple months and i've been very suspicious about it. at times when i'm not even doing anything, the task manager will show it jump up to 100 CPU. i feel like i notice all kinds of suspicious stuff in task manager, like multiple "com surrogates" that ALWAYS disappear split seconds after i open task manager, but when i run virus scans they "don't find anything"...

i hope i'm wrong and it's not something "shady".... in my case i am just "dealing with it" because i'm poor and at least it "works"

but in your case sounds like you can't just live with it.. i hope somebody can help you, and worse case i hope you are financially able to get it looked at. i'm sorry i have no advice other than just having a similar problem. hope you can resolve it soon!

hopefully this won't come across as dismissive but have you heard of cocoasplit?
    http://www.cocoasplit.com/
my friend with a macbook air seems to have better luck with that as a streaming service than OBS
