When you make a character, could you please put more thought into it than "what general type should it be?"
FOR EXAMPLE.
I just saw a reference sheet with the following text.
Species: Bat
"Bat" is not a species. The ORDER Chiroptera comprises about 1,240 different species of bat.
Instead of saying "bat" you could perhaps say "fish-eating bat" or "Kitti's hog-nosed bat" or even "golden crowned flying fox."
"Bat" doesn't cut it.
This isn't limited to bats, either. Here is a list of commonly used animal classifications often used as species:
Fish
Parrot
Bear
Dinosaur
Bug (which actually is the name for only insects in the orders Hemiptera and Homoptera)
Moth
Lizard
Snake
Turtle
And I could go on and on.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm not really opening this for discussion. Yes, I realize that sometimes it's just too much work to do research on your chosen animal. I realize that sometimes you want to just have the general aspects of a creature, such as large wings, a weird-shaped nose, and big ears. But please, for the love of science, don't call it a species if that's not what the taxonomic classification is.
I'm a biologist, what can I say?
