Pieces by theblackrook

We leave pieces of our self, just about everywhere
Pieces of who we are, broadcast out in the air
All the pieces of our self, who we thought we would be
Enough pieces to build something between you and me

Not versatile or pliable, nothing so strong or reliable
Something frankly definable and equally undeniable
Something hard to perceive and even harder still to see
Something that costs you everything but is always given for free

Either a wall or a bridge do these pieces build
Understanding or contempt in all that we feel
Little pieces of hope, faith and love yet unseen
Or a frank affirmation of the gulf far between

Each has its dangers, each takes its toll
Each brings us sorrow and each makes us old
Each gives us a reasons to be who we are
Each can leave us wanting or take us too far

But as far as we go and as far as we've come
The more pieces lost the more we go numb
Leaving pieces of ourselves and then moving on
Giving away who we are until we're all gone
