Weasyl: First Impressions by LogarthSheppy

I've spent the first few hours of browsing Weasyl not looking at other peoples art, but checking out their extensive Policy section. I appreciate that they tried to make the Terms of Service as legal eagle as possible, and hope they add to it and strengthen the language a bit as the site grows. Otherwise, everything else looks very very locked down and I particularly enjoy how they codified different sections of Policy so that it's not just one giant blob on a single page that you have to slog through to find a specific guideline. The cherry on this is the Staff Code of Conduct. While a very sharp double edged sword that could hobble the ability of the admins to be effective, it looks more to be an outline for current and future admins to know exactly *exactly* what will be expected of them while at the same time letting the user of the site know the extent of the admins influence, for better or worse.

The site interface is interesting, and I'm slow to make any judgements because it is still in Beta. I haven't seen any huge issues thus far, except for a few annoying things. For one, accepting a friend request shouldn't take you away from the Manage Friends site to the user you're adding. Submission for pictures is still a bit convoluted, but again it's beta. The front page is well done, but perhaps site posts/announcements could be in a more visible place instead of at the bottom of the page, since they are probably pretty important. A sidebar or maybe a header with a link to current announcements? Again, beta. It's excellent so far that it's really just minor stuff like this that is coming up, and I look forward to seeing Weasyl in the future.

Recently, there has been a huge influx of people coming to the site, via the open beta on Feb 18. I haven't noticed any huge amount of lag, but imagine that as the site gets more traffic, that response and performance might degrade. The interface is pretty lightweight tho, so I'm expecting that if the site gets to the point where it starts getting slow, it will be a connection issue and not a hardware issue. Not knowing anything about how Weasyl mirrors its servers or if it will even try to co-locate, I can only assume that with an actual technical director that appears to know something, that any issues that arise will not persist. *knocks soundly on wood*
