I'm gonna be that guy who hates change and say... by Majatek

Why.

Just why. What's the hate with neatly organised square thumbnails? Not only is it harder to scan pages for content now, it also does the content no justice.

Sigh.

Seriously just make visual art auto-generate square thumbnails (custom thumbnails are not at all necessary for visual mediums) and allow artists to upload a custom thumbnail for literature.

    This shit's retarded.

Aye, you're literally the only person who is against this. There was a lot of empty space on those pages, and this offers more comprehensive viewing of pretty much everything.

I'll get used to it, but I still won't like it. :B

That's only for my gallery, and nobody else's.

    I do't like it either.
For all the wrongs on FA, they DO have thumbnail options.
This makes it look like someone with half a mind cut out many images from a magazine and pasted it in a scrapbook. None of the images are the same size, some are still the stupid "hey it's just a headshot preview because I want more pageviews" thumbnails.

    It looks sloppy.

And I thought the whole point of thumbnails was to save on server space. So what does that say about these HUGE thumbnails?

They're not actually that much larger—I'm guessing the previous ones were 250 pixels square with blank space at the sides of automatically-generated thumbnails whose aspect ratio wasn't 1:1, and the new ones are 250 pixels tall and maintain the aspect ratio.

I'd be interested to know how they handle really wide and really tall images, though - the latter would produce an unclickably thin thumbnail, while the latter is liable to produce a disruptively wide one. (If you remember the fun people had on FA when they discovered it scaled up avatars and maintained the aspect ratio, it would be similar to that.)
