A while ago, I got a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. These Android tablets, for those who don't know, have pressure-sensitive Wacom technology built into them, so you draw on the screen with the stylus and it works just like a Wacom desktop tablet would with pressure-sensitivity and everything. They are wonderful devices. It's actually where I do most of my sketching now, before bringing over the ones I like most to GIMP on the PC to ink and color them. But, every now and then, I feel like doing a complete image with it. And with LayerPaint HD, I can~!

It took a while before I stumbled into LayerPaint HD, a seemingly obscure app compared to the others. But I quickly fell in love with it because it addressed every single issue I had with other Android art apps, including Photoshop Touch, which tend to be arbitrarily crippled.

For starters, it actually has selection tools and the ability to scale and rotate selections. You have no idea how this is conspicuously missing in most apps for no good reason. You can set up your own brushes, color palettes and set anti-aliasing on and off for everything. You can scale the UI to whatever size you like it and have many options for palm rejection. You can use it in landscape or portrait mode (another omission from a lot of these programs). Oh, and layers? We've got layers with different modes and transparencies of course. Have as many as you want. There are even gradients.

One of the most clever things it has is a floating widget that has undo/redo/eyedropper buttons. You can float this to wherever you want it on the screen for easy access. It's the next best thing to a hotkey.

Downsides? Well, sometimes it's a little pokey when save/loading or doing filter operations. And it could really use a Magic Wand tool. It used to have some quirkiness with palm rejection, but with the addition of the Disable Multi-Touch setting last week, that has all been fixed. But other than these, I have no complaints.

So, basically, LayerPaint HD lets me do almost everything I can do on the PC on the tablet. I can't recommend it enough to Android artists. If you have an Android tablet, go check it out!
